Good to Know

When you are well informed you are better equipped to deal with a crisis.  There are several consumer organizations whose sole purpose of existence is the interest of the insured.  They can assist you with information and guidance.

United Policyholders

United Policyholders is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering the insured through education on issues of insurance and policyholders’ rights.  It was founded in 1991, and has been working with victims of natural disasters ever since.

In addition to helping policyholders with specific needs, United Policyholders provides consumer-oriented insurance education in Texas, Florida, New Mexico, Oregon and California.  Much of their work takes place in communities that have been hit by hurricanes, wild fires, earthquakes and floods.

United Policyholders participates in regulatory proceedings on rate and policy issues.  Insurance is subject to changing laws, and consumer rights are vulnerable to attack. United Policyholders is always on guard for those changes, watching out for you, the insured.  You can learn more about United Policyholders at www.unitedpolicyholders.org.

FEMAINFO.US

FEMAINFO.US is another non-profit organization.  It is an informational site which is run by volunteers who have been victims of disasters.  The organization was established in an effort to correct unjust settlements offered to victims of the 2003 Hurricane Isabel, and prevent similar injustice in future.

FEMAINFO.US is not affiliated with any government agency, and was created with the purpose of helping disaster victims by…

  • Educating and providing them with useful information which will aid them in receiving fair settlements.
  • Advocating on their behalf by working with legislators and government officials.
  • Collecting information about less than satisfactory settlements and acting to rectify the situation by bringing them to the attention of the proper authorities.
